November Events in Paris

Yakoi Kusama exhibit in ParisParis in November just may be the most romantic time of the year. The foliage is turning various shades of red and orange, and what doesn’t still cling to tree branches carpets the city’s sidewalks and jardins. The chill in the air is the perfect justification to order up a cup of vin chaud. Festive holiday lights along the Champs Élysée and the various rues and avenues of the city make the early arrival of darkness worth welcoming. And the creative holiday windows of the shops and grands magasins become crowd-pleasing events. (more…)

Private Paris: Food and Wine Gets Personal

Cooking TogetherStory by Sophie Delon

Diane Anthonissen has come a long way from the corporate life she built for herself in Chicago. Over 4,000 miles and four years, to be exact. Armed with an M.B.A. and 15 years experience working with various big corporations, Diane and her Belgian-born husband relocated to Paris in 2006 where, after finding inspiration in the city’s open markets and extraordinary restaurants, Diane ditched it all and enrolled in the culinary program at the prestigious Ecole Ferrandi. Eighteen months of hands-on, full-time training led to positions at several grands restaurants around the city.

Susan Barbour found her way to Paris by following a more poetic path. Literally. This published American poet is currently working toward her doctorate in English through the University of Oxford. But on one fateful day in 2005, a grape changed her life. It was in the Sauternes region of France that she discovered the poetry of wine, after which she returned to the states to get trained and certified by the Wine and Spirits Education Trust, becoming a professional sommelier in the process.

As fate would have it, these two American expats are now working together, having created several unique Paris events for P.S. Privé, the Paris experience company created by the founder of ParisienSalon.com, Linda Donahue.

In the Atelier Vin et Macs, for instance, Diane has created several macarons specifically for this event. Each is infused with flavors that are designed to help participants understand the subtleties of wine, helping them identify the various nuances found in each wine and champagne selected for the workshop by Susan.

“When you use other foods to help establish a taste memory for wine, it’s easier to train your palate,” Susan explains.

The chef and the sommelier take a similar approach to the Atelier Vin et Fromage. Where Susan will show people how to taste wine and read a wine label, Diane will reveal some time-honored secrets when it comes to pairing wine with cheese. Five varieties of cheese will be sampled during the workshop, with Diane explaining the differences in their milk sources and aging process.

Another event the two are very excited about is the Private Salon Dinner, where Diane will create a sumptuous three course dinner for guests, along with an amuse-bouche, served at the table of her home near the Louvre. Wines personally selected by Susan will be served at each course, with a brief explanation of each by the sommelier-poet.

Finally, the Rue Montorgeuil Tasting Tour will take visitors toe the famed Paris market, where Susan and Diane will lead an exploration of the various boucheries, fromageries, legumeries and patisseries before heading back to Diane’s for a lunch created from the ingredients purchased at the market.

“We think these events will give visitors to Paris a really good insight into the city,” offers chef Diane. “And they’ll get to leave the city with information, and maybe some new skills, that they can use at home.”

To celebrate the launch of P.S. Privé, all ParisienSalon.com readers will receive a 10% discount off any workshop or event for the month of July. Just use Promo Code PARIS10 when making your booking.

There will also be special celebrations during the first two weeks of July, with prizes, gifts and some special surprises at each event.
