48 Hours in Paris: Day One

I can still remember my first time in Paris, and how daunting it felt to have a week to explore everything the French capital had to offer. I was overwhelmed by all the possibilities while terrified that I’d miss something important. So when I get emails from readers and friends alike that they have just two days in Paris, I’m overcome by sympathetic panic attacks. Totally Seine in Paris

A few years ago, during one of Paris’ notorious strikes, the metro and the buses were shut down for nearly a week. After a few days of going à pied, I realized I needed to figure out some alternative transportation to get across the city to the Marais. There’s no shortage of controversy in the French capital. Most Parisians will still hotly debate I. M. Pei’s glass pyramid at the Louvre, more than 20 years after its completion. By the way, if you’re ever asked by a Parisian what you think of the pyramid, please note that there’s no right answer. If you say you like it, then you’re accused of having no taste.
