Bargain Shopping in Paris: Discount French Fashions

reciproque-shopping-parisSpecial report by Madelyn for Paris Perfect Apartments

I’m no Parisian fashion plate, but I love a bargain as much as the next person. My ‘copines’ or French friends have been telling me about two clothing stores for years, both located in the 16th arrondissement. It took me forever to visit, but what a discovery! Reciproque and Catherine Max are two of the best bargain fashion stores in Paris!

The 16th arrondissement is less known to visitors than others.Located on the right bank of the river, next to the the 8th arrondissement, it’s upscale and very French. Some say that the French nouveau riche live there.Whatever, the residents love high style, good food and a bargain too.

Food-wise, here is where you’ll find Alain Ducasse’s new cooking school, which has received excellent reviews.

Paris Fashion Bargains:

Reciproque is the largest designer consignment store in Paris. It is located on rue de la Pompe, starting at 89 rue de la Pompe, and is actually seven separate stores and over 10,000 square feet of selling space.Open Tuesday to Friday: 11 am to 7 pm.Saturdays: 10:30 to 7 pm.

Here is where Parisians go to sell that extra Hermes scarf, extra pair of Jimmy Choo shoes, Prada, Lancel, or Kelly handbags, fur coats, Bacarat crystal, Cartier ring or Chanel suit. If you’re selling, you must make an appointment and a consultant who will carefully review, estimate and either accept or decline your items. They must be clean and in excellent condition; some have never been worn. If you’re buying….”Bienvenue!”

You’ll find everything from women’s to men’s clothing, jewelry, watches, luggage, decorative accessories and then to numerous important categories: day shoes, boots, evening shoes, beach shoes to scarves, Hermes scarves, other scarves, raincoats, coats, handbags by all makers and on and on.

Discounts range from 20% off full price to 80% depending on the item and how many they already have in stock. There was a surplus of fur coats when I was there last, but they were desperate for more Kelly handbags. For example, fabulous Dior evening shoes were € 299, about 40% off regular price and hardly worn.

They had rack upon rack of Chanel suits, already discounted and on special promotion. When you see how great Chanel jackets look on French women with a pair of jeans, it was so tempting!I own too many Hermes scarves thanks to my mother-in-law who believes one can never own too many. But the beautiful selection tempted me to buy yet another, at € 195 versus € 300 new in the store…and in perfect condition. If I ever have a special occasion for an evening gown – or if our 14 year old daughter needs a pair of glass slippers to attend Cinderella’s ball, this is where we’re heading first! Click here more information on Reciproque, Paris’ largest designer consignment discount store.

catherine-max-parisCatherine Max, located at 17 Ave Raymond Poincare in the 16th, is a large store that sells designer overstocks and, if you love fashion, definitely log onto the site and join their email list!Every few weeks, I receive a tempting invitation to their next sale for designers from Lacroix to Balenciaga to Kenzo, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Jacadi and more. Most interesting are the wonderful emerging designers known to fashion aficionados who are given a chance to sell their goods here: Raffinee’, Frenetik, Jonak, N2 and others.

Catherine Max started out years ago, begging designers to sell their overstocks through her ‘private sale’ invitations in Paris. She originally rented rooms and empty shops throughout Paris but finally opened her flagship store in the 16th a few years ago. With the internet, it’s been easier for her to advertise to a wider audience, sell more goods and become ever more popular with designers who have overstocks to sell.

The online store offers ongoing bargains by new and established designers as well as ‘limited availability’ merchandise and clothing. Her website is a little confusing to navigate but fascinating to cruise through on your coffee break. Some of the household items are cheaper at discount stores in the U.S., but some items such as Estime leathergoods – are excellent prices and we’ve never seen anywhere else but in France … and they are definitely sold at a discount.

The in-store offerings offer great prices for merchandise you wouldn’t find elsewhere. Click here for more informationand photos on Catheirne Max’s discount store in Paris.
