You’ve seen this restaurant before, at least if you watched Sex & the City. This highly photogenic restaurant also doubles as a popular nightspot atop the Paris headquarters of Kenzo, facing the Pont Neuf. Style is everything here, from the décor to the sophisticated clientele, but substance plays an even bigger role.

The menu, a Japanese reinterpretation of French cuisine, has been masterfully created by chefs Fumiko Kono and Richard Pommies. Veal chops are flavored by yuzu sauce. Japanese Udon noodles are topped with fresh lobster. All dishes are offered in a rather zen-like presentation and, most important, taste as good as they look.

I wasn’t expecting much, given the hype about this penthouse eatery/nightclub. So I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the food was delicious. I’m always nervous about ordering steak in France, given the difference between what we Americans consider to be “medium rare” and what the French believe it to be. So when my steak was served American medium rare, I was thrilled.

The staff was friendly and helpful, offering their suggestions for wine at each course. Dinner for two – which included two appetizers, two main courses and two desserts – along with a few glasses of wine (and a cocktail) came to about 100 euros.

Afterwards, we moved to the lounge and spent a bit of time enjoying drinks and good lounge music amongst the beautiful people of Paris.
