Want to learn how to say “oui?” Yes?

Today, we’ll look at some of the ways to respond affirmatively in French, starting with the basic one: oui [wee], meaning “yes.”

  • Bien sûr [byeh(n) sewr]: of course
  • Si [see]: yes (in response to a negative statement)

As in: Tu n’as pas appris le français? (You didn’t learn French?) – Si. (Yes, I did.)

  • Mais oui! [meh wee]: literally means “But yes!” but the actual meaning is that classically stereotypical French expression “But of course!”
  • Oui en effet [wee ah(n)n eh-fay]: yes indeed
